On December 12th, concluded the 7th UN Environmental Assembly, the world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, organized by the UN Environment Programme.
Themed “Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet”, this edition saw an unprecented number of events tackling the interactions between Artificial Intelligence and the environment.
After weeks-long negotiations, the Assembly adopted resolution UNEP/EA.7/Res.9 on “environmental sustainability of artificial intelligence systems”, proposed by Kenya, a founding member of the Coalition.
This resolution built on the momentum that the sustainability of AI needs to be addressed comprehensively. As recalled by the Global Digital Compact adopted in September 2024, “digital technologies unlock new capabilities and opportunities for advancing environmental sustainability.”
