IEA Observatory on Energy and AI
The International Energy Agency (IEA), in consultation with industry and key scientific stakeholders, has launched the first global observatory dedicated to energy and Artificial Intelligence, providing a global vision of AI-related energy needs and AI opportunities for the energy sector.
Faced with the growing challenges related to the energy consumption of Artificial Intelligence and the opportunities it represents for the energy sector, the International Energy Agency is launching a Global Observatory dedicated to Energy and AI. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with industry players and scientific experts, aims to provide a global and informed vision of the impact of AI on the energy sector.
The Observatory is based on several key objectives:
- A centralized information platform – to provide a single reference to gather and disseminate essential data on the relationship between AI and energy.
- A dynamic update of knowledge – to ensure regular monitoring of the evolution of the sector, by publishing data and analyses continuously.
- A decision-making tool – to provide policy makers and stakeholders with reliable data to better understand the challenges and opportunities related to AI in the field of energy.
- A balanced approach – objectively analyzing the impacts of AI, and highlighting both the benefits and challenges for different sectors and applications.
The Observatory is structured around three main axes:
- Energy challenges related to AI – analyzing the electricity consumption of data centers and AI models, based on regional estimates and transparent methodologies.
- Optimizing energy systems through AI – producing a series of case studies that highlight concrete applications of AI in managing electricity networks, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
- Disruptive innovations – monitoring major advances in AI applied to energy, exploring areas such as new storage technologies and innovative materials.
Through this unprecedented initiative, the International Energy Agency aims to make a decisive contribution to understanding and managing the interactions between Artificial Intelligence and energy. The Observatory thus aims to become a reference tool for decision-makers, researchers and companies in the sector.
