Jul 8-11- ITU’s AI for Good Global Summit (Geneva, Switzerland)

ITU AI for Good

The 2025 AI For Good Global Summit, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with over 40 UN agencies and co-hosted by the Swiss government, is set to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event aims to connect AI innovators with decision-makers from both the public and private sectors to scale AI solutions globally.

July 10th, 2025: Navigating the intersect of AI, environment and energy for a sustainable future

As part of the Summit, the July 10th workshop will be dedicated to understanding and managing the relationship between AI, the environment, and energy systems. This full-day session (09:00–17:30 CEST) will feature expert insights, real-world applications, and policy discussions to address the dual role of AI (as both a solution and a contributor) to the climate and energy crisis.

By bringing together thought leaders, innovators, and regulators, the session underscores a shared commitment: to ensure that AI becomes a driver (not a detractor) of sustainable development. It will notably feature interventions from some Coalition members, including NVIDIA, Orange, Resilio, PrunaAI or the French Ministry of Ecological Transition.

Key Highlights of the Day:

  • Session 1 (09:15–10:45): Understanding AI’s Environmental Impact
This session will unpack the resource intensity of AI, examining its lifecycle footprint, from data collection to model deployment. Speakers like Francesca Dominici (Harvard) and Josh Parker (NVIDIA) will explore both the risks of unchecked AI energy consumption and its potential to enable smarter environmental decision-making.
  • Session 2 (11:00–12:30): Innovations in Environmentally Efficient AI
With keynote presentations from researchers at LMU Munich, Yale, and Hebrew University, this session will spotlight breakthroughs in energy-efficient hardware, frugal AI, and sustainable data center practices. It will also explore how renewable energy can power the AI systems of tomorrow.
  • Session 3 (14:00–15:30): AI-Driven Sustainability Across Industries
Moderated by the World Bank, this session highlights how AI can reduce environmental impact in sectors like energy, transportation, and agriculture. Tools like CodeCarbon will demonstrate how developers can track and reduce the carbon footprint of their AI models. Contributions from ZTE, Pruna AI, and Imazon will ground discussions in practical, scalable use cases.
  • Session 4 (15:45–17:15): Standards, Policies, and Regulations for Sustainable AI
This final session turns the focus to governance, exploring policy frameworks, data center standards, and industry regulations needed to ensure AI is developed and deployed sustainably. Featured speakers include Juliette Fropier from the French Ministry of Ecology and Dominique Würges from ITU.
  • Workshop Wrap-up (17:15–17:30):
The day will conclude with closing reflections by Gitta Kutyniok, Chair for Mathematical Foundations of AI at LMU Munich.
