December 3 – UNEA-7 Associated event – AI for the Planet: Advancing Environmental Data Standards for Sustainable Artificial Intelligence

About the United Nations Environmental Assembly

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, with a universal membership of all 193 Member States.

It sets the global environmental agenda, provides overarching policy guidance, and defines policy responses to address emerging environmental challenges. It undertakes policy review, dialogue and the exchange of experiences, sets the strategic guidance on the future direction of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and fosters partnerships for achieving environmental goals and resource mobilization.

The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) will take place from 8 to 12 December 2025 at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

About the Session

  • Wednesday 3/12
  • From 15:00 to 16:30 EAT
  • Mt Kenya room, UN Campus in Nairobi or via video stream

This side event at UNEA-7 brings together leading standards bodies, scientific data networks, research institutions, and government experts to address the critical challenge of environmental data interoperability. While environmental data is abundant, its value is often locked away in silos or rendered inconsistent by a lack of common standards. The event will explore how harmonized data standards can unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for environmental action, supporting the implementation of the Global Environmental Data Strategy (GEDS) and enabling collective, data-driven solutions to the environmental crisis.

Objectives:

  • Help policymakers understand the value of interoperability standards as essential tools for effective environmental decision-making and governance.
  • Promote collaboration among standards bodies, UN entities, and Member States to advance environmental data interoperability under the GEDS framework.
  • Highlight how interoperable, standards-based data is foundational for trustworthy, efficient, and sustainable use of AI in environmental applications.
